Nice welds guys. I've never had experience with TIG, but hope too in the future when i can afford one. Right now its only MIG with my Lincoln 135T. Anyways, I don't know if this is against forum policy or not, but i was refered here by a friend. I'm starting up a "finishing" forum at http://www.finishingforums.com/forums/. If any of you want to post there please feel free. Its pretty bare right now, but we're trying to look for some people who can contribute. If this is against policy please delete my post or let me know and i'll delete it. Thanks and i hope to see some of you over at my forum.

Yea, we've just gotten it up. In the coming weeks we're going to start adding faq's with pictures to some of the forums, and eventually search engine submission. It's a work in progress that i hope will be help to some people. Sorry for hijacking the thread, just spreading the word.

ya if you dont find it online, your local supply store should have convenient cards with tip size, and a free booklet on welding even.

Here's an IC I did this last week, dont have alot of Aluminum experience, but i think im getting the hang of it. My boss wants me to weld up his APEXi core, Im scared
Anyways this is a dodge truck IC i built endtanks for, first IC work ive done.
we cut it in half, its still really big
Still have some small things to do, need to bead the inlet/outlet, etc...

good job! the first IC that I did was a tiny ford intercooler. Aluminum just takes a LOT of practice. I've got around 500 hours welding aluminum and I still have room for improvement

when you guys weld pipes, do you have any techniques for cutting just the right angle so the pipes are flush for welding, or is it not that important- if there are uneven gaps just make a bunch of tacks until its filled?

Metal fit is very important, different gaps apply to different welds.
When your jigging everything together u need to pay close attention to setting the gaps right so you have proper penetration.
The gaps need to be pretty consistent or your going to have inconsistencies in the beads/penetration as well as the look of the weld.

I use various tools to cut piping, If im lazy and dont feel like walking to the chop saw or band saw i'll cut it with a die grinder/cut-off and use a 5" to clean it up.
I usaully use a 5" to clean it up either way and if your good with metal finishing work you can perfect your angles/gaps with the 5"

If your MIG welding you can fill gaps much easier rather than TIG. But It usually looks like *** after filling big *** gaps.

Everyone has some really nice welds. I want to get into welding, but scared to try. The last welding I did was in high school 8 years ago doing arc welding. My beeds were decent and hardly any splatter then with arc welding. My teacher said I was one of the best in his class @ that time. I was supposed to go back and learn some mig and tig welding, but never got a chance to. I regret it now. Is arc welding considered hard?

I don't think arc is too hard, since you basically only need to know the settings.

heh, yea it did. I'll try to give it a lil jump start again by showing everyone my first try at a mani...I didn't really have a plan for it, just started tacking some piping to the flange just to see how it would turn out To merge em all together for the turbo flange seems impossible so I'm just going to take it apart and start over, and just do a basic log manifold or something.

ph33r my failure

yeah I'm not really ready to start doing anything complex like an equal length mani just yet. I'm going to attempt a log manifold for my 02 civic si sometime over the next week or so. Try to create something like a RH kit at a cheaper price...
