New Welding Thread!
Yeah it did slow down
I have some cool **** Im working on, so I'll be back to show some stuff!
Part numbers...I don't remember one, just call them or paypal them and say, I want (what you want here) and they will have it.
I'm gonna convince them to stock 40 schedule stainless piping!

well bandsaws cant really do U-bends
i highly recommend a exhaust cutter, rusn aroudn 30$ and no mess.
you can find em at Jcwhitney.com looks like a bunch of circular wheels and a chain. works great ! youll need a vice however. collector cuts. check our renoracing's old posts

a horizontal bandsaw can cut u bends if you make a little table to convert it to a vertical bandsaw when needed. It just needs to be large enough to support whatever you are cutting and keep it from getting ripped out of your hands.

i guess i need to make a bigger table for my jet bandsaw -=T i forgot about putting it up verticle.

got ya covered man! I got the green one for $150 and I have to say that it's not bad at all. I'd either go all out the first time and get a $800+ Jet, or start off w/ something like this and then a year or two down the road upgrade.

yeah just read that reno. looks nice, might eventually get one.
question though, say I do get one. Can you really weld collectors with mig? It looks like it would be too hard to get in there w/ the gun?

one more question: for stuff like making exhausts, downpipes, IC pipes, and maybe eventually ss manifolds, which would you recommend: the lincold 135t or the 135 plus?
You can get inside the collectors w/ the mig. you weld up the collector fully before you attach it to the rest of the manifold and you can do it, not the easiest thing ever but cant be much tougher then getting the tig torch down there and then dabbing away. I looked at welders for a while and talked w/ several salesmen at different welding supply places which lead me to my final decision of the Hobart 175 unit. its almost the same as the Miller 175 just rebagged and according to Miller representative the hobart is a better unit. Even the 135 is a great deal at $400. I guess It's like the whole chevy/ford thing. I just like Miller/Hobart over the Lincoln.
well I bought the 135T today!!! but when i opened the box the gauge face on the gas regulator was busted, so its going back tomorrow morning. I'll post pics of my first welds ever tomorrow....
whats the easiest thing to practice? butt welds on 1/8" mild scrap?

No way, man. In its price class, the Lincoln 175 Tig is completely outclassed. The Miller Syncrowave 180 (transformer-based like the Lincoln) and the Thermal Arc 185 TSW (inverter based) kick the Lincoln's ***.
The Miller and Thermal are more powerful, have far superior amperage vs duty cycle curves, and their post-flow settings are adjustable. The Lincoln pukes out argon for 20 seconds after a weld. That is incredibly wasteful and the 20 seconds is not adjustable.

its no doubt an awesome machine but the thermal arc 185 tsw can be had in a ready to tig package for around 500 less than you can buy just the machine from miller. then you have to buy a torch, regulator, foot pedal, ground clamp, tungsten... it ends up being about a 1000 more for a machine that has slightly higher duty cycle and amperage range and can plug into 115v wall outlet.
