Hey Overblown,
You are using a Ban saw I'm assuming. Any pictures of the machine, I've cut a few angles such as those in my days but the chop saw is starting to scare me more and more so I'm looking at getting something that will do what you have done in a safer manner! I'm mostly interested in the clamping and angling device on the ban saw. thanks.

I normally get my stuff from http://www.mcmaster.com because my father gets, what they call, a "small business discount" At my job we have a couple of sayings about the mcmaster catalog. 2 of which go like this "It's the steam/operating engineer's bible" and "if it ain't in there, you don't need it" or "...it don't exist"

As for projects, My dad has me making him headers for his 72 monte carlo. I wish my usb ports worked because they are coming out really well. Even pops is impressed. It took me 2 weeks to get done and I should be done with the passenger side by the end of the week and finish up with a dual exhaust by the end of the weekend. I can't wait because even with just the driver's side done you can already hear the thunderous roar of the 350. Pop's is loving it because all he has to pay for is material but you can bet your *** I'm keeping the pattern

Those tubes I got from mastercarr.. I will be ordering the next batch locally as its quite a bit cheaper most times. Look for an industrial supply house..

Here is a pic of the jig and my saw.. its the JET saw from Northern tools. Maybe Tinker and some other guys will post up their Jigs to help out others.. This one actually works very well and the vise locks into angles very well.

I see, so you set the table guide it self up as if you were doing a 85° or so cut and then you made a jig that buts up against the guide at a 90° angle and the tubing is clamped into the angle iron jig. very helpful pic! thanks a ton.

Cody, or anyone feel free to post your setups as well, if they're not a secret that is! lol.

thanks guys.

Cody.. Just to let you know the saw I have cuts one of those pipes in under a minute. They are schedule 10 but I think 40 would be about the same.. You keep talking about hours for one collector I cut them all in under 10 minutes.. You should really consider a better saw..

So how are you cutting your pipes? I used to stand them up on end but it was alot harder to control them.

I know I need a better saw, that comes after my $30k shop that Im almost broke building
whatd you spend on your JET? Ive seen a couple nice saws for around $1k, but dayum that seems kinda $$$$$$ to me for a saw...
my jig is setup opposite of the way you have it todd, thats all Im saying

It was like $1200ish with shipping.. it does a really nice job though.. One will cut as fast and nicer than the four you have running now. I still need to pick up the coolant for it.

BTW that intake looks pretty good. Nice design.. How did it go welding to the cast?

hmm...10 minutes eh? even w/4 running all day, i got through 1 blade each per day($20 each), and it still takes me 4 hours to make a damn collector. Ok, next big purchase is a saw.
Thanx, I found a flaw though that I will correct when I make my next one(two h22s, b20, and b16a to come). From the #4 cylinder to the TB will be an angled plate instead of a big empty 90° corner there. Other than that, I think itll work LOT better than the stock one
The cast wasnt that bad at all, wire wheeled it, and easy as pie. I think the reason why I couldnt weld aluminum before was because I was WAY OVER HEATING it. I think I was around 150 amps. Also, I hadnt developed the "pulse" method, where you heat when you dip, and cool when youre not dipping. This seems to help ALOT when its dirty metal.
For reference, heres the manifold that Todd is talking about:

Its going on a d16z6, in my 89 4dr(thats going to be AWD via a wagon drivetrain ).
a t3/60-1 turbo will be used, just 6 psi. Should be able to see around 200 awhp

Yeah really! And $1200 shipped for that really isn't that bad.

Hey Cody, maybe you can tell me why people angle the backside of their intake manifolds toward the front right after the tb? I've seen it a lot lately and I'm just curious.

It has to do with equalizing the airflow to each cylinder...Im only JUST beginning to understand the fluid dynamics of the intake manifold, so Im not a pro. Get Boosted Hybrid in here, he will wreck some ****

Makes me wish I could practice some more on aluminum. I'm still creating what looks like mashed potatoes made of metal

turn the heat down, and pulse your foot. on 1/8" AL, Im around 80 amps...
also, dont dab any filler in until there is a DEFINATE puddle. WHen you dab, dab with some force! Like quick! hope that helps if youre having trouble w/starting a puddle go get a while wheel and wheel the **** out of it...

Interesting setups of your collectors guys. I kinda use the same method but i use a vertical band saw and push it through, cuts really fast and does take up much romm at all. Only draw back is you have to manualy push it through, theres no setup and walk away.
I need to get a digi cam so i can pics of all my cool stuff too.

this is the band saw i use, it came with a table (not being used in pic) but i jsut threw in on the workbench. It also can be used vertically witch i might try. i was useing it for intercooler piping in that pic, but it cuts anyting. i think it was $200

only thing with the one that you got that i can see is that the blade only has about 8" if that of cutting surface exposed at a time which might just barely be enough to cut the sharp angles like shown above. Might work. hmm. that's the harbor freight one right? I'll check one out this weekend and see if that' would work.! thanks for the pics and help. bump for a good thread!

anyone care to share their tig welding technique ?? like when you get the flow going do you just keep it at a steady rate and move and push the molten metal ? or do you pulse the pedal so as to achieve dimes ?

and for all of the sharing in the forum !!!

for AL, I pulse, dip, let up. Pulse, dip, let up. When I let up, I dont let up all the way, just enough to make the puddle dissappear. Sometimes if Im feeling lazy, I just kinda drag the filler across whatever Im welding, and melt it into the two pieces. This oviously isnt as "dimy", but it gets the job done
