Default VTEC engagement....

I just replaced the head gasket and my car along with the timing belt and water pump. When I take off in 1st and lets say I am going to redline it into 2nd well when the car gets to 4k it slows down and slowly moves up to 5500k where it will then start to open up. When it does open up VTEC does not sound as loud or seem to pull as hard as usual. Any suggestions?
