Default Visual Differences between a B18CR and a GSR Block

Hi all,

I am new to this forum and would like some help on how to distinguish a B18CR and a GSR engine.

I have read up and they say that to distinguish the 2, one must look at the engine number with a B18CR spotting a C5 as compared to say a b18C1.

Ignoring the engine number, are there any other ways to distguish a GSR from a DC2 block? Would appreciate your inputs and help.

Regards,
PS: Pls don't tell me the red valve cover

there are a few things such as the nuber on the head. gsr says P72 type r says PR3
the block for gsr says p72 teh type r block says p73. intake manifold on gsr is dual stage and looks funny. type r manifold looks like b16 manifold single stage. if u really wanna get picky the gsr water pipe on teh back of the block is different than the type r and b16. i cant think of anythign else.

on the jdm r block it will just say b18c, the tranny will have a big LSD stamp.

the jdm type r motor will have b18c on the block, and PR3 on the head thats all u need to look for. jdm gsr motor will say b18c on teh block and P72 on the head. thee ya go.

I believe that the 'block' is the same, so you have to take your cues from the parts installed. The engine/transmission brace is different, the crank is different, the rods are different, the pistons are different (look for P73 up top), the head is different.

The Type-R was basically a blueprint/balance of the GSR, along with fine tuning of crank/rods/pistons/valve train and a light touch porting the valve pockets.

For many folks, so much is replaced with aftermarket parts that the Type R'ness gets lost...

WRONG.
A type-R block (US & JDM) uses a P72 block.
If you look at these blocks, you will find a "P72" part number on the backside of each and everyone one of them:
US> B18C1, B18C5
JDM>B18C/SiR-G, B18C-R, B16B

The only real way to tell a GSR block from an ITR block is by the engine stamp and the part number on the piston top(s).

so i guess without actually opening the head....there is no way of telling between a GSR block and a Type R block? Is that correct?

Tks for all the inputs....

...well, yes, as far as JDM B18C blocks go.
For US B18C blocks, just read the block stamp and that will tell you right off the bat.
