Transfer case symptoms
I did a search on this and found basically nothing. My car is making some weird noises and I think I narrowed it down to this. My question is what are the symptoms of a transfer case that is going out? If it helps its a y1 tranny with lsd. Any input would be most helpful.

The noise is a loud and vibrating and tends to happen at above 3000 rpms and usually when the car hasn't been ran for a few hours. But after driving for a while it tends to just go away. THe noise also goes away when I put the car in neutral. All the gears go in great. Any insights?
I have a b16 cable tranny with LSD.

I never tried just pushing the clutch in. I'm usually driving on the freeway when the noise is more apparant. I will try it out tonight and see. Thanks

If it's something with the clutch or input shaft, it would depend on engine RPM. If it was final drive, differential, or axle shafts, it would depend on road speed.
So... Note the speed & rpm where it starts making noise in 5th gear. Try in 4th & maybe in 3rd. Does it start at same RPM or does it start at same road speed?
If you can make the noise when the car's not moving, that's good to know. Because then you can have someone poke around the hood & pinpoint the location.

Thanks for the good info JimBlake. I really appreciate it. IT happens in all gears and at a certain rpm in each gear. What does that lead to?
Can you make it happen in neutral?
It sounds like a bearing on the tranny input shaft. I think you'll have to take the tranny out to investigate further.
I can't hear the noise from here, but normally they can get pretty noisy before anything drastic happens. Still, the worst case is the bearing puts shrapnel in the tranny which damages your synchros along with your other tranny bearings. I guess I wouldn't sit on it for too long.
I don't know what that would cost. If you don't feel comfortable dismantling your own tranny, maybe start looking for a used replacement tranny.
