Default Helicoil Install

My driver's side motor mount holes 2 out of 3 are stripped. I have experience using taps which was my first idea, however, I couldn't enlarge the holes of the motor mount even with a drill press because the metal is too strong. So I figured I try the helicoils.

Now, I have the helicoil inserts but do I need an install kit to use them? How do you insert them? Btw, the original bolts were m10 x 1.25, and I have m10 x 1.5 helicoils with new bolts matching that size.

Okay, I didn't get the kit, only the helicoil itself. I do have the correct size tap though for the helicoil, can I sub something for the install tool? I'm assuming you drill the hole out, tap it, then insert the helicoil, correct? Wondering if I can use something other than the install tool to get it in there....

Are you sure? You know that's not a normal size tap, right? It's a bastard size that matches the outside of the coil.

You could make the tool by taking a rod sized to fit inside the coil. Cut a slot across the end of that rod, so you can fit the tool in thru the middle of the coil & the tab of the coil fits into the slot of the tool.

I assumed I had the correct size tap, the helicoil is m10 x 1.5, that's the size tap I have. I'll probably just buy the set tomorrow.... stripped holes suck

M10x1.5 is the size of the inside of the coil, to match the original size of the hole. If it's stripped, the hole is already bigger than that.

The special HeliCoil tap has the matching pitch (1.5 threads/mm), but the diameter is bigger to match the OUTSIDE of the coil.

are you talking about the 3 holes that are on the block that the motor mount bolts too? if so it would be better having thread inserts installed exspecially if you plan on running decent power. mine stripped and i did heliacoils and they came out. had a machine shop install the thread inserts and never had a problem.

I understood, just thought I had the right tap originally. I went ahead and bought the kit. It was pretty straightforward, fortunately it worked out well. thanks
