Default Tire removal from rim

Is it possible to dismount a tire from a rim by using regular hand tools? Has anyone ever attempted this? I plan on letting all air out of the tire before trying to do this, given that it works. Any input appreciated.

I haven't tried, nor do I want to. I've done it with the proper equipment at a friend's shop and it was difficult if you didn't know what you were doing.

A buck knife is your only option.

Has anyone every actually done this, or do you recommend having a shop take them off?

deffinately a shop. You are more likely to damage the lip if you use say a krow-bar.

Yeah you need the special tool at the shops, I've used it and should know what its called, but you definately need that if you dont want to damage anything...

I've got your answer right here.. I remember hearing that in the old days where Bubba was a decent Mechanic, they would dismount tires themselves..

To do this, they would first deflate the Tire..

Next they would place the Rim and Tire on the ground..

Third, they would run over the Tire with a big Truck..

Last, they'd do the same for the other side of the Tire..

And if you're wondering how they inflated the tire, they used some kind of gas and lighted it inside the tire. It would swell up real quick and seal the Tire and Rim together really well...

That's just Bubba though.. Good Luck..

Hey, I remember that. It works too.

But, I'd never try that on my rims/tires.
