Is Runing Lean Dangerous?
My b18c is runin lean as hell. Im using b16 injectors/fuel rail and PR3 ECU cause its in a EF, and geting unbelievable gas mileage. I need 200 bux to custom chip it, but that wont happen for another 2 weeks, could i be doing damage to my engine runin this lean? Does a lean mixture cause detonation? the compression ratio is about 11.2:1. I dont hear detonation, and im not sure where my timing is set right now, i know my plugs are white though. Help me out guys, should i drive it for two weeks till it gets chipped?
First of all, yes. Excessively lean conditions are one of the main causes of pre-ignition. Running lean+11.2:1cr=boom
Secondly, how do you know that you're running lean? Do you have any idea what your actual A/F is? Are you boosted or is this NA?
Just because you don't hear detonation does not mean it is not happening.
I wouldn't drive it until I had it on a wideband so I know what is actually happening inside the engine.
Good luck,
James

You are probably fine. All b-series injectors are the same size.
The B16A FPR might have a bit lower pressure, but no big deal.
White plugs doesnt mean much to the average person. Only a few people know
when and how to check plugs correctly.

I know im geting like 35-40 MPG's. Im still breaking in the motor, so i dont really give it that much gas, but thats still crazy gas mileage. Wouldnt i be able to hear detonation? Its a loud ping isnt it? Like if i put it in high gear and give it some throttle i thought you could hear it. Sounds fine to me though. Ok, well i need to chip it soon. The guy i bought the engine off had a Mugen chipped ECU, and the plugs were a nice and healthy grey. Then i checked 'em two weeks after i got the car and they turned white. Also, could retarted timing cause the engine to run hot and turn the plugs white? I havent checked my timing since i got the motor.

i dont know how well founded this idea is. usually "chips" advance timing and that is how they are "supposed" to make more power. i say you save up and get a hondata or at least a vafc. its much more worth it.

It can happen at an RPM. Its harder to hear at high rpm if you have a loud exhaust. Its usually pretty apparent if you put a huge load on the motor at low rpms. Some people can pick it up in the upper RPM, but I have trouble hearing it over the exhaust and intake.
I cant say that ive heard a clicking sound, but my gas mileage is just horrific. Ive put 150 miles on it since my last fill up and the needle says im still 3/4 full. Maybe a fuel pump upgrade would help? A type R or Walbro 190 LP?
fuel management is one of the most if not the most important thing in a motor.like the story of the 3 bears it has to be just right,to little fuel=excess heat that will kill your pistons rings and plugs,to much and you run like ****,and could fuel wash your cyl. walls and kill your rings and put gas in the oil.
For a nice long happy engine life, proper timing and fuel are crucial. If it's just an off the shelf chip, what motor was it tuned for? My understanding was that most chips here are based on an old Mugen race chip for the TypeR. The timing and fuel curves are especially important on any Honda VTEC motor due to the cam change. Whatever tuning method used, running it on a dyno is the only way to be sure it's right. Was the motor apart after the guy you bought it from sold it to you? If not, it was broken in by him and does not need it again. If you do drive it, I'd be very careful. Watch the revs, DON'T LUG IT either. Don't just throw parts at it, get the sensor to be able to read the actual mixture, then fix it. I have seen the turbo/SC guys with knock sensors that will let you know when they are working. That way you can set the timing to the motor, not some "standard" setting.

Im gonna stop driving it, ive started feeling hesitation on light throttle. I think its the plugs misfiring cause im runing so dahm lean and burning them up. Anyway, sending the injectors to RC for a bluprint and rebuild, and geting a custom chip for my application, ill also buy new plugs before driving it, oh and a new fuel filter. So no driving for a week, better stop now before i blow something. P.S. Geting ATLEAST 40 MPG's!!!!
if ur having fuel probs get a vafc or hondata...theres no way your stock injectors are even close to maxed out...so just push a lil more fuel thru your stock ones ...they will still be in a healthy range...anyway your best bet is to get on a dyno and watch your a/f ratio
I dont know y its geting such freakish gas mileage. Using that same ECU, fuel rail and injectors i was getin like 25-30 MPG's on the old b16. Then when the GSR motor went in it was getin like 30-33, but once i got it rebuilt im geting 45!!!! NO check engine light, i dont get it! Im stumped.
