oil disappearing!!!
I'm losing a good chunk of oil pretty frequently. The motor is a B16 in a 92 cx hatch, the oil is just disappearing...
the car is not smoking blue, just fuel smoke...
all major gaskets were changed, vtec solenoid, Dizzy O-ring, oil pan, oil cap was replaced...
the car will hold oil for about a week, or 250-300 miles...
then, it just goes from full to the low dot on the dipstick in 2 days...
i've been told that honda specifies a healthy VTEC motor to only burn a quart of oil every 3 months...
so what gives? I don't smoke when i just drive around, i just smoke under heavy load...i've also been told that it is not blue smoke, so can anyone offer any insight? the only gaskets i haven't changed are the valve cover and cam cap seals.. however, if i'm losing that much oil in a 2 day process, it would be all over the motor...apart from smelling a little oil when i drive, the motor doesn't smoke...
also, my idle will hunt occasionally...it will go from 1100 to 500 and just keep hunting...

look on back of block, look around oil filter, look at bottom of cap on distributor as well as distributor to head, check valve cover gasket, front of block, even down under main pulley where bottom of timing belt is, and rear main seal where bottomo of tranny is.

Is the motor leaking any oil is the first question. Also if ur blowing smoke out when u get on it or in vtec means u need to bore over ur block or get new rings.

it's not oil burning smoke, which has blue tint...
It's just fuel smoke, which is black...
i can't locate any leaks...my rear main seal is relatively new, it's only seen 1'000 miles
i've checked the pcv, it clicks and functions normally...
any other reasons why my idle might be hunting?
and why i'm consuming oil like a fiend?

okay, the results of the compression test are in...
165, 150, 125, 160
125 in the 3rd cylinder...
we put a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder, it raised it to 160..
oil rings are shot...
the wierd thing is, the plugs are white and clean...so, could it be piston rings or valve seat?

sounds like you washed the rings and cylinder walls by running the car too rich. too much gas will thin out the oil between the rings and cylinder walls causing excessive wear to the point where it causes blow-by and burning oil. next time around make sure your car is properly tuned.

ok...that makes sense...
i bought the car with the fuel pressure regulator set the way it was, i never changed the fuel pressure so far...
i bought the car from a stupid kid that ran it as rich as possible, trying to go for that backfiring, fire-ball, wake-the-dead approach...
i'm just gonna drive this one the way it is, i have an LS motor i'm building, as soon as i'm done i'll just drop it in and rebuild the B16 bottom end for a ridiculous turbo setup...i'll probably drop in an 88-91 and go for a Ferrari-style build...
what i mean, is something that has a great port job on the head, revs at about 9500, turbo, and making about the same power as an F355 Challenge...
i like to use other cars as influences in my builds... I had the Mazda CX-7 in mind when i build my dad's CRV, and i had the Type R in mind when i built an EG i had before, it had an integra dash and nice stitching in the interior...
i don't like to just think Civic when i build something...because, to me, a stock civic is in the same category as a Camry, or Corolla, or something that a grandma or a fratboy yuppie would drive around...
now, the JDM civics are nice, because they actually perform, they aren't just econo-boxes..
