Default Lean vs Rich

Ok. So what exactly happens when you run too lean or too rich? Does it cause a big problem?

i owned an 88 supra. i was 16 at that time, driving it like i just bought it. unknowingly i was running lean. 3 months later, my mother had to pay to get the block rebuilt and purchased a rebuilt head as well. she ended up paying 1k for everything. learned from that mistake.

just something to be watching for with situations like these.

lean you'll detonate, and put a hole in your piston

rich aint that bad but you'll coat your cylinder walls with gasoline after a while, adn **** up your piston rings, and you'll start smoking

Running to lean mean high temps. You can melt pistons and fry rings. Fried rings means messedup cylinder walls. Runnign too rich.. well it'll clogg your cat and suck your wallet dry for gas guzzling.

also your engine should run cooler, if you are running rich, and you would be putting out alot of black smoke, when u get on the gas, or u could smell the unburnt fuel, also check your spark plugs to be able to tell.

I hear air/fuel ratio gauges aren't too accurate, so they say to get an EGT(exhaust temp.) gauge. But what should the temperature be on when you're running normal(stoich or whatever it's called)? And what's the temperature when you're too rich or lean?

nope a normal o2 is crap...a wideban o2 is useful, but not worth it imo

as for EGT guage...kind of less useless, but still useless in a way, the problem with it is that say you run lean for a min...by the time the guage shows you taht your lean you would have blown your motor...that's under heavy circumstance, if you wanna see if your runnin a bit lean...I dont know how to say the term, but by the time the guage shows it, you lose a lot of time...meh there's a ****** term, can't figure it out

I hear air/fuel ratio gauges aren't too accurate,
something that uses a zirconia element that produces a reference voltage used by the ECM/PCM is pretty accuate way to measure A/F ratios.

a set of LEDS (light emitting diodes) that measures this 0.01 to 0.9V signal is going to be fairly accurate for non-tuning purposes.

eg in car monitoring whilst driving...

that is, it is usefully to detect gross fluctuations in A/F ratios...

but hey, why the rant?

i dunno, maybe cause i never heard that A/F gauges wernt accurate before?

are they or arnt they?

t..

Air/fuel gauges show trends but not exactness.
