Default running lean and problems why?

Ok, so I know that running too lean causes bad things to happen like fried piston rings, etc, but why exactly is this? What does the excess air cause?

It is almost counterintuitive.

hotter combustion due to more air then fuel to keep it stoich, high heat and detonation cause thing to melt in a big hurry...
