intake noise
now, i kno this may sound like a stupid question, but its a question i've been wondering about fer awhile. i did do a search for 'intake noise' and 'intake loud' but didn't come up with the answer i was looking for.
so, my question is, y is an aftermarket intake loud? now, i kno the stock ones have resonators and all that other sound dampening stuff, but WHAT makes the loud 'booooonnnnnng' sound. obviously its the air moving, but is that the sound the air makes when going through the filter? bouncing off the inside of the tube?
call me a n00b, but i've always wondered this. thanks in advance. o, and no flaming plz. =\

I believe its because the intake pipe is bigger and uniformly round with no sharp angles in the tubing and the intake filter gives the sucking part a restriction so it resonates or humms in the tubing.. like when you whistling but instead of blowing, you're sucking.. iono if anything i said holds true or makes any sense... time to sleep.
plus most intakes use an open element filter...the stock intakes have a plastic box surrounding the filter with a really long air inlet tube and resontor connected to the box...that's why the stock setup eliminates most of the air intake "sound"...
when comparing a Mugen/comptech air intake to, let's say any AEM, the AEM intake will always be louder since it uses an open air filter element inconjunction with their larger diameter pipping...late
edit: for spelling

I just put my AEM Ram air in my 93 civic last night. I will tell you this, it sounds soo sexy lol.
At idle its a light whistle and when you pop it into 2 or 3rd and rev it hard you get a throaty engine sound. Nothing too loud but very nice.

yes yes, i understand about the open air filter and such. but the actual noise, is htat just air going into the pipe because its going so fast? air going through the throttle body? is it even air that makes that noise? is it engine noise echoing all the way out of the pipe!?! (ok, that one sounds dumb) but WHAT is that noise? i kno y its louder, but what is that noise? i dunno, maybe i'm not being clear.
