if the valve cover is off does that affect compression?

if the valve cover is off does that affect compression?
hey this is prolly a really stupid question, but if the valve cover isnt torqued down on one bolt all the way, can compression be lost'?? i thought compression was held in the chamber by valve seals...etc..etc..im prolly wrong though
