Default how tight does the shifter nut and bolt have to be?

i just installed my short shifter, i kept tightening the nut and bolt till it wouldnt move, doing that made my shifter so hard to shift i had to MUSCLE it just to get it in gear, so i backed off and barely tightend the bolt and nut, is this how tight its supose to be ? just a little over hand tight
