Go to your local machine shop and ask for Plastigage. You probably want the green color for main bearing tolerances.

If you've never done it before you should let the machined shop assemble it.

i use micrometers. it's just what i'm familiar with, and i trust them over plastigauge(sp?). works right every time.

Why?

There are plenty of writeups about using plastigauge and measuring the clearances... plus it's explained in the shop manual.

Just read about how it's done and then do it... what's so hard about that?

Mic'ing the crank journals, and then diameter of the crank bore's in the block is far more accurate than plastigauging. Yet i do plastigauge just because i dont have a set of mic's or dial indicators...

.015" is the measurement on the green plastigauge that is used, and if the plastic strip crushes more than .015, you cannot tell what the exact measurement was..

i sure hope so!

my 0-6" mic set + 5/16" - 6" telescoping gages cost me around $120. invaluable if you plan to do bottom ends. 0.0001" tolerances, and you can measure your bores, journals, whatever for size, taper, and out-of-round to make sure 1) something isn't worn out, and 2) the machine shop did a good job of boring, honing, align-boring, or whatever.

mic the crank; using a bore gauge zero it out with the measurement of the crank.
with bore gauge measure the difference on the block's bore.
mic the bearing and voila.
