Default ecucontrol rs232 or general electronic question...

So, I just got a max233 chip and am going to slap it into my ecu, but I can't make out or figure what values for the resistor and capacitor I should use right here...is there a rule of thumb for this, since it's a 5v supply? .1uf? Oh, I guess the resistor is for the LED? Sorry to be useless...
And so no one ****** my thread; ecucontrol is datalogging for obd0/1 for basically pennies. http://www.ecucontrol.com

So, basically what I'm asking is what value capacitor should I place between V+ and V- for this chip? It's a 5v input...also, I bought kinda the wrong chip (16pin vs. 20pin) but, I should be cool, except that the one I have doesn't have an internal capacitor for part of the circuit...so, what the hell do I do about that?
