This is a vtec soleniod problem i'm having. from c-speedracing.com "VTEC Solenoid Valve defective circuit or unplugged / defective solenoid valve"
I just replaced the vtec soleniod with a new one and no dice. I have the black ground wire ground to the negative battery terminal and the other wire going to d6. However, i'm using a big ecu pin (like one meant for a4) instead of a smaller ecu pin. could this be my problem if the cel only lights when i bring it up to vtec conditions? I would think if it was a wiring problem, the CEL would be on as soon as you turned the ignition to run. any ideas?

The VTEC solenoid valve is up higher on the spool valve, & it's only got ONE wire, going to A4.
The ECU probably doesn't know whether the solenoid valve is plugged in, until it tries to actually USE it.

i just went out and tooled around with it for a minute or 2 and here's what i found. If you unplug the vtec soleniod, code 21 comes on when the ignition is at the run position. I plugged it back in, reset the ecu and no cel but it comes back on when i try to hit vtec. I take it into the garage, turn it off and let it sit and think about what it's done for a few minutes, cel goes off.
This leads me to think that it isn't anything wrong with my wiring. If it wasn't making a proper connection, the cel would stay on all the time. according to the vtec oil pressure sensor, the oil pressure is fine and according to the coolant temp sensor, it's warm enough. what gives?

i think you may have it bass ackwards. the oil pressure switch has one wire that runs to a4. i tested that by unplugging the vtec oil pressure switch and it throws code 22 which according to c-speedracing.com is "VTEC Oil Pressure Switch defective circuit or unplugged / defective oil pressure switch"
edit: hmmm maybe you're right after all and i have the pressure switch and the soleniod plugged into the wrong pins...
edit: damnation, i think i plugged the oil pressure switch into a4 and the soleniod into d6. i'm going to go check that right now

Well, like I said, Preludes might be different. On both my '95 Integra & '98 Accord, the pressure switch is located down lower, has a 2-wire connector, & looks a LOT like the radiator fan switch.
The VTEC solenoid is at the top of the spool valve, bolted down by a triangle-flange, & has a short wire with the 1-wire plug hanging on a bracket.

damnit, i'm an idiot, i plugged the spool solenoid valve and pressure sensors into the wrong pins on the ecu. i fixed it and it pulls hard.
