can it be a blown motor ?
i recently purchased and ek hatch with a b20 vtec motor (B20 block w/GSR head) .
i was told that the tranny was screwed up and that 5th gear didnt go in . their was oil all over the left side of the motor but mainly all on where the tranny meets the block . what can this be . currently the vehicle has an open header but the motor idles straight .
can this motor be blown or what can it be .
please help.

What doe the oil look like. Is it motor oil, tranny oil? Check all your seals, Look inbetween the motor and tranny for a leaking rear main or tranny input shaft seal, look at your lower timing cover for possible crank seals leaks, valve cover gasket, cam seals, etc. It is also possible your v-tec oil line or headgasket is leaking oil as well. Get a light in there and look around. What I would do is clean it all up real good with brake clean inthen start it up and try to see where it is coming from. Just because you are leaking oil does not mean the motor is blown.
how would a blown motor sound with a open header ? it idles fine and starts right up but.... im not sure what the problem is . like i said before the oil is only on the left side basically on top where the block meets with the head and tranny .
we did a compression test and it came up :
1st cylinder *210
2nd cylinder *185
3rd cylinder *190
4th cylinder *198
i was thinking it was the seals too but im not sure .

i actually started the engine and left it running for about 2-3 minutes and it left a big puddle of oil on the ground . their is a slight knocking .
The oil there could be a head gasket, distributor seal, v-tec oil seal, cam seal etc. Clean it up and see if you can pin point it with the motor running. You could use a dye test as well.
As far as the knocking goes you need to get that take care of. I would do an oil pressure test and go from there. This may sound dumb but did you check your oil after the motor strarting knocking? According to those compression results the combustion side of your motor seems fine. I would worry about the knocking. Does it only do it at idle? When you rev?

Yeah anyways alot of misinformation in this thread.
The oil is just a symptom of typical Honda cam seals. Oil seepage from the exhaust cam seal runs down the left side of the block and covers the engine stamp and transmission housing.
If you truely want to tell if the motor is "blown" - compression and leakdown test. Anything else is just voodoo speculation.

ok well i got the car back and running . i just swapped a b16 in there . ahh... its so great . brings me memories of my old ek .
but anyways yeah the compression on the b20vtec wasnt bad . the 1st and 4th cylinder were like 200 but the 2nd was like 185 and 3rd cylinder was like 180 .
i heard that i guess that rod knock happen ever since they built the motor . i think im goin to rebuild it but not sure exactly where to start .
