Default Cam Timings Affect on Ignition Timing.

So I retard my cam timing 4 degrees, how does this affect my ignition timing? Does it retard it 8 degrees? Do i change cam timing first, then ingition timing? Thanks.

oh btw its a SOHC if you didnt know.

Each 1 degree of cam rotation is equal to 2 degrees of crank rotation. If your timing is already retarded, and you retard it 8 degrees, it may not idle for you to adjust it so you can either advance ignition timing a few degrees before you adjust the cam gear or adjust a little at a time.

Set the cam timing then reset the ignition timing then test drive/dyno.

ok, cause for my setup, i want about 4 deg retarded on cam, and 19 deg on ignition, i know i will have to file dizzy holes in order to get to 19, but will my car idle ok? D15B7 w/ D16A6 cam.

Have you tried different positions for cam gear, mine seems best 2 degrees advanced, retarded lost ALL bottom to mid and made my power band from like 6k - 6500. Also, don't go more than 4 either way, especially if you had head milled, otherwise you may hear the unpleasant "dance of the pistons and valves"

What if you have a powerfc or something that sets your ignition timing and doesn't use the distributer settings. If you advance the intake cam (dohc) a couple degrees it doesn't do anything to total ignition timing right?
