If you adjust the intake cam timing on a DOHC engine, you also alter the base ignition timing. The same is true if you adjust the cam timing on an SOHC.

that means, if i only adjust the exhaust side, i don't have to make changes to the ignition timing?

The intake cam is what drives the distributor, not the exhaust. If you adjust only the exhaust cam, you haven't effected ignition timing.
