Default Bad distributor cause change in timing?

My distributor on my h23 is about to go out. When i noticed my distributor was makin a lot of noise i noticed that my EGT was WAAAAY low in the 500 degrees C range on the highway.

Could a bad distributor mess the timing which in turn could mess with the EGT's?
