any VW mechanics here? 87 GTI 16v
i think i found a killer deal on an 87 gti with low miles...for cheap! but dude thinks the tranny is on his way out. he said his friend took off the cover and said it was toast. but who the hell is his friend? problem is that the tranny whines. supposedly it shifts through all the gears and drives fine. i'm gonna test drive it tomorrow. any ideas? i've been on http://www.vwvortex.com, it sounds like replacing the tranny fluid should do the trick...i don't wanna get stuck with this car if it's a dud, but it's a good enough deal that i'm really excited about it. help please!

There's no 'cover' for you to take off & see that it's toast. (Manual, right? Auto wasn't available on GTi/GLi right?)
Go ahead & change fluid, but even that's a little strange. In '86 the tranny sits not exactly horizontal. But they didn't re-design the case. Add fluid to the fill hole, then add some (??oz.) extra at the speedo cable.

Test drive it, then run with that statement about the tranny cover. Knowing that it's bogus to take off a cover & find it's bad, you can still use it to bargain down the price.
Don't forget to inspect everything else.

Re: (phateless)
If you need a tranny I have a really clean 83-84 GTI Tranny that has VW Motorsport gears and final drive in it. It comes factory with these gears. I am not asking too much for it so let me know. Thanks

well it makes a clanking sort of pop sound. driving forward or reverse, when in gear (only with the clutch up) it goes thunk thunk thunk, increasing with vehicle speed. push in the clutch and the noise disappears. on or off throttle, doesn't matter. shifter feels great, all gears hook up and engage. car seems to drive fine but the noise is alarming! any ideas?
