Default problem with the auto tranny

Yeah, I know, auto tranny. Any way, I asked this a little while ago, and I got to ride in my roomates civic. Basically what is going on, is as he starts off, the car shudders, then takes off. It seems to me that the car is having trouble engaging into first gear from a stand still. Anyone have any thoughts?

How do you know it's the tranny and not poor engine maintenance?

Can't hurt to have him change the tranny fluid and filter.

When he idles, it idles nice and smooth, and when he is in neutral/park and revs the motor, it sounds crisp and smooth like it should. <--That there made me think it wasn't poor maintenance

Torque converter is slipping then. When was the last time he flushed the tranny? What color is the ATF? How does it smell?

I don't think he flushed it, so I can ask him that. I will also have to ask him about the color and smell. How is tranny fluid suppose to smell? If it smells burnt like a worn out electric motor, what is that an indicator of.
