Default #3 cyl

im just curious, what is it about the no 3 cyl that makes it weaker than the others? im just curious cuz my #3 sleeve popped on my ls-t, and i have seen a million others that have done the same thing.

It runs hotter than the others because it has two combustion events occuring on either side.

The ignition sequence is:
1-3-4-2

So when you view the cylinders:
1-2-3-4

You can see why #3 runs hot. After it fires, #4 fires directly to it's right, then #2 fires directly to the left. This keeps the cylinder hot which means it's more prone to detonation on the next cycle which means it's more succeptible to a cracked sleeve.

The #2 cylinder runs the second hottest. After it fires, #1 fires directly to it's left, then #3 fires directly to the right.

So, basically this is a heat problem rather than a pressure problem?

Yep. Extra heat causes detonation. Detonation blows sleeves.

but my car never once detonated. i kno that ls stock internals are good to about 250 hp and the sleeves are good to about 300, and i was making 238 hp and 200 tq at the wheels so i should have been well within the "margin" as far as the sleeves go.

Right, well with a good tune, the sleeves will hold 400hp. But they won't hold 238 when you're detonating.

Where were you when the sleeve blew? Dyno/track/street?

Either way, it had to be detonation. Nothing else will destroy a sleeve like that at such a low power level.

ok im sorry, i never heard it "ping" or anything else. i just assume that it didnt. if i used a stock sleeved bock and used an alcohol or water injection system would i be ok at this hp level? i plan on building a motor to put in here, but i need something to get me by till then.

You didn't hear it, that's all.

Forget the sleeves and water injection, that won't do anything at 240whp. Just find a better tuner that won't blow up your motor again.
