A little confused... please lend some help (couldn't find in search)
I am planning on putting a turbo on a ls engine into an eg hatch. I already plan to replace the rods and go with 9:1 pistons. I don't really want to spend the money on sleeving the block, but I will save up if it is really what i need to do.
I want to get a reliable 300+whp. I'm trying to decide on what turbo to use though. Everything that I've read here and in books have stated that the stock sleeves are good to about 15psi with a good tune (which I will accomplish with hondata)
I would like to be able to get within my hp goals without exceeding that 12-15 psi window and not have to wait until 5500-6000 rpms to get there. That might not be so bad if someone could tell me that if I replace the valve springs and retainers that I can rev to ~8k all day without worry.
One more question... Why is it that the rating for the stock sleeves based off of psi? You can shove a bunch more air though the engine with a bigger turbo running at a lower psi, but running a higher psi on a smaller turbo is stressful??? Could someone please clear this up for me.
It's a lot of questions, but I would appreciate any and all help.
Thanks,
Eric

The reason I ask is because everyone that makes those kind of numbers are using pretty big turbos. I only saw one dyno on stock sleeves that made that kind of power and it used a SC61.
Why do you say that the stock sleeves can take more than 15psi when the general train of thought is that it isn't reliable after that much boost. Many books and even people on here state this.
I understand that these questions get old and I'm not lazy... I've done my searching for the last few months, ie my low post count. I also realize that information changes over time and I'm just tying to get the most accurate for my setup. I've seen too many people disappointed in their turbo choice/setup because of misinformation or lack of.
I'm by no means trying to cause an uproar but it sucks that every questions is basically aswered with 'search'

i don't think that i replied with "Search" i simply answered the questions. tons of people have threads about making high hp on stock sleeves, just off the top of my head i think there is a guy making 520hp @23psi on stock sleeves for a long period of time now. and yes, to make good numbers you are obviously going to have to have a bigger turbo than just a 18g or a small t3/t4. alot of people use the sc61 and make good numbers with them. i have an xs t04x and i made 320hp @12psi on a stock motor - yes its reliable
don't get your panies in a wod, you might have to search for more than just a "few minutes"

Thanks, that helped a little bit more. With a SC61 you don't hit full boot until ~5-6k, correct? In that case, is it worth it since I believe the ls redlines around 7k. You said that you rev to around 7.5k... is that on a stock ls head?
BTW, it's panTies and I grew out of that phaze a few years ago.

Hey dude, I wouldn't get a sc61 if I was you get something smaller like a sc-32 or something like that. Your hp goal isn't that high so i would really stay away from big turbos that take a long time to spool up.
If you are building a street car you will appriciate it a lot more if you spool up earlier.. And have more bottom end hp instead of having a big surge of power up top.
Trust me I ran a 60-1 on my street car and sure it was ******* awsome up top but there wasn't **** for power till 5500rpm..

Cool, thanks I was kind of expecting that the SC61 was a little big for my goals but I don't want to max out a smaller turbo. Where can I find the specs and maps of the precision turbos since they don't post them on their site?
BTW I have a GTI with the stock turbo and it pisses out on top really bad and I definately do not want that. Bugs the crap out of me.

with an sc61 you should see boost before 5500rpm. with my turbo i start to see boost around 4000 and get full boost around 5000rpm. i love the lag
i'd rather have a big turbo doing less work, then a small as turbo that almost maxed out
and yes ... i rev to 7500 on a stock head - the rev limiter is used frequently !
