Default D16Y8 Tial 50mm Q BOV Question...ASAP

When I took my car to a shop to get my timing/tune done, the shop told me that my BOV was broken or something because it stays OPEN during idle, but closes during throttle.

He claims I either need a new BOV or a 11psi spring to keep it closed during idle, but I was told by another shop AND from go-autoworks that the BOV is suppose to remain open during idle and close during throttle to prevent surging.

I don't feel like wasting another $20/30 for a spring that might not even work, considering i'm only going to run 7/8/9psi of boost since my motor is stock.

^That's the exact turbo kit I have, so you guy's can see what my setup is like. My motor is bone stock aside from a fresh headgasket, APR head studs, Skunk2 Intake Mani and that turbo kit.

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and can explain to me what's going on lol.

Who tuning your car? And why do you not know how a BOV works?

I know how it works, but i'm getting mixed comments on how the Tial BOV is suppose to work. The shop thats tuning my car say's it's NOT suppose to be open during idle, cause it's considered a vacuum leak. But 2 other shops I contacted stated that it's fine and they've tuned cars with a similar setup as mine. I would go to another shop, but I had to get it towed and this was the closest performance shop near me.

Absolute Pro-Formance is the shop.

Go to a different shop. The one you are at does not know the difference between speed density and mass airflow based cars.

edit: it does not matter if your BOV is open at idle because your air metering system (MAP sensor, on your car, speed density based) is behind the throttle body. because the BOV is not behind the throttle body it does not constitute any sort of vacuum leak.

Its still not a good idea to have the BOV open at idle.... thats unfiltered air. Id recommend stepping up a spring or two.

my Tial stays open at idle and air is coming out of it, not getting sucked in. I have yet to see a Tial stay shut at idle. I actually had to go one spring lighter to get rid of all the surge. Both springs allowed it to be open at idle

this is really simple guys. test your vacuum at idle and buy the correct spring based on their chart

my ITR had 23" of vacuum so i used the 12lb spring. yes it was shut at idle and yes it worked properly.

if you have 20" of vacuum you would use the 11lb spring

look at the chart, buy the correct spring, end

vacuum testers are $10 at harbor freight
