Have you checked to see if the radiator fan is coming on?
As for pressurizing the system you need a tester that fits over the radiator and it has a gauge with a squeeze handle and you pump it up the right psi, and you check for leaks etc.

This. I had this happen to me. My radiator fan went bad and wasn't coming on. At idle, at a dead stop, it was enough to cause the car to overheat.
Did you try bleeding your coolant system to get air bubbles out? If there is air bubbles in your coolant system, the temp gauge will rise while your car sits still. When you start driving, the temp will decrease back to normal.
