Icon2 D16Y8 Transmission Problem

Car: 2000 Civic EX Coupe
5 Speed Manual Transmission
135,000 miles

Problem: I have a problem with 2nd gear where half the time it works, the other half it will just pop out, but not all the way out just enough to make a grinding noise yet not be providing any power.

It has always had this problem for the past 2years but lately has been getting worse. My shifter has a LOT of play while in gear, enough where I find it amazing I still shift fine, I looked under the car and there are 2 different linkages going up front, one of them has tons of play in the shaft and it looks like there once use to be bushing on both ends, but they have just evaporated over time. The other shaft appears to go inside the transmission and has no play, the one with play just bolts to the outside of the tranny but does not go inside.

Question: Would replacing these bushings and eliminating shifter play fix this issue? Or is it most likely inside the transmission?

Thanks! Oh yeah, I'm new.

If the bushings are shot it will have play, replace them. Under what conditions does it pop out of 2nd?

Anytime, it is random, sometimes it will not pop out throughout 2nd, other times it comes out immediately, if I just drive around in 2nd, such as in a parking lot it will always eventually pop out. Really annoying. I've started just going from 1st to 3rd whenever I can.

Usually popping out of 2nd is from worn engagement teeth on the sleeve, the bottom bearing walking up, or a worn top C/S bearing.

Popping out of second would be the clutch side countershaft bearing has walked out preventing proper engagement of second gear.

Tap it home and stake into place.

I'm thinking of attempting this repair myself, is it necessary to have a hydraulic press?
