I have a 90 DA that is 5 speed and the problem is that everytime im crusing on the highway in fifth gear it pops outta gear a few times...but today on my way home it popped out 6 times until i decided to hold the shifter in fifth gear with out letting it go...and this time it didnt pop outta gear!!!!....wtf!!!...is going on has anyone ever expericed this problem before.....shifter also has a lot of free play to the point where it feels like neutral when it is in gear...can it be that my shifter bushings are completely worn or something in the shift linkage is loose??...

most likely it is an internal problem inside the transmission. and it will be much cheaper to just buy another used one than to have someone rebuild it.

 

I checked the tranny and it looks like its leaking fluid....I have to check and see if im low on fluid or if im completely out....can that also cause this problem??

I have to change one of my mounts because i can feel the motor shift everytime i switch gears

 

Problem solved....i drained out my tranny fluid and only about 1/2 a quart came out... tranny had close to nothing of fluid in there....so i changed the fluid and now no more 5th gear pop outs....

 

Similar thing happened to me. I needed to fill it up with fluid.

The two main things that can cause shifter play is a bad or worn bitch pin and/or bad bushings.

 

It sounds to me like your 5th gear syncro is going bad. Changing the fluid might help but wouldn't cause that to start happening. Since your fluid was low id be watching for other things now cause its never good to drive around with an empty tranny.
