Default d16z6 vs d16y8

Okay, so I'm going to swap in a d16 in my car here soon. I want the engine to be fun but reliable, I intend to save and put pistons and rods, and all the fun aftermarket parts in it. But it still has to be daily driven. So I'm wondering which one of these engines would be better for my goals. I have a 93 Civic coupe. I've heard that you can re use the stock mounts since its still d series and it also bolts to my tranny.

Why not do a b18a1? It's dohc and has more power. They are all reliable. I think the b18 will handle more power. D16 is a economical way to go. Depends on how much you want to spend and how much power you want.

If it's only those 2 options, I would say z6, especially if your going boost later.

i would say z6 as well but ^ b18a1 is too old, b18b is newish and has a little more power but not much, their are some pistons that you can use from an integra that can jump the cr up to 10.1 or 11.1 and other pistons from a much older teg that jumps the cr to 13.1 i think super street mag was answering a question and they told the guy to use those certain pistons, who knows...

yeah i've got the 11.1 compression pistons you are talking about, but i can't remeber what engine they where for.. 13.1 makes for some nasty torque but not the best setup for a daily driver. Plus if you ever think you may turbo it, 13.1 would not be the route i'd go on intial setup.

Z6 is a better engine than the Y8 mostly due to having two oiling holes per journal in the crank, Y8s only have one which is the biggest reason you hear of so many people spinning bearings in Y8s.

y8 head the best head and cam though.
agreed. ive thrown up a few y8 blocks. spun bearings. broken rods etc.

the best combo in theory still today is the
d16a6 blcok
y8 head and cam
and si tranny.
and gx pistons if you can find them

The question is D16Z6 or D16Y8?

D16Z6 without a doubt, especially for that 1993 Civic.

- Z6 is a better lasting engine than the Y8

- Z6 will have all the same plugs as the 1993 Civic

As far as the pistons, CR, etc. etc. there are a ton of different ways to build a SOHC.

Click HERE for a really neat compression calculator.

i think you guys were talking about the d16a1, or the zc dohc motor from the 1st gen integras..

i believe the pistons are pg7?? not exactly sure. but this setup would be a HCR.

For pistons yes, as far as the block goes no, D16A6 from the '88 - '91 Civic Si, it has a steel girdle as opposed to the aluminum girdles found in everything else.

PM7, you can also use P29 pistons found in the JDM OBD1 DOHC ZC. These pistons are domed and raise compression.

I have a D16Y8 but I am using a OBD I ECU from an early year for tuning capability. From my research that is why I did that, but I can not complain about the D16Y8. Just wish I had a better trans like LSD :-)

Makes no difference between these two engines. Especially on stock applications. Don't waste your time or money.

You're new here, so I'll try to be nice. Check the last post date before bumping a dead thread, especially if you aren't adding anything new. Thanks.
