HPDE w/automatic tranny?
Alright, hopefully starting next season I'll be able to attend a few HPDEs, but my only car that I can take has an automatic. While I know manual tranny cars are more reliable on track, I don't have one! Do you think the auto tranny can take the abuse of driving around the track? If so, what can I do to help keep its temps down(I'll start with a tranny cooler)? Thanks for the help guys...I know you know the answer
I would think so, probably as start going faster and Transmission Cooler would not be a bad invenstment. In fact his weekend there was an automatic 928 S4 he did not seem to have any problems and he was an intermetiate drive... of course why he bought and automatic 928 S4 ... no clue

dont take it, youll be laughed at and they wont take your money...
actually, its fine. just one less thing to worry about when going around the track the first time.

A manumatic type tranny (or some sort of sport mode) isn't too bad, but there's a lot of control to be gained w/a manual. The torque converters and shift response time and engagement timing are disadvantages I'd say.
But all in all, seat time is seat time.

At the last event I went to there was an all stock Camry Solara, and I'm not sure he had an automatic b/c I didn't go check. I'm assuming I4 auto because he was pretty slow in the straights and I didn't see a V6 badge. But he more than made up for it in the turns. This was the beginner's group and he was very fast with all that body roll, dysplaying some really good driving skills. Probably just using that car to learn, which is the best way to do so.

On a related note...what are the chances of the car flipping due to excessive body roll(not including going off track)? Is it likely it'll just understeer as the tires reach their limits(don't even want to think of race rubber for this car)?

PS. I started in an automatic. One less thing to worry about. I also had a hyper-drive student on sat. w/ an auto. I had him put it in 3rd and it worked great. We hit the speed limiter (105) on nascar 3 &4 but never the rev limiter.
At my last event, my instructor was driving a Kia Optima with an automatic transmission.
He wasnt slow, the car did just fine.
