B20 or H22 in an 89 Hatch?
Well, pricewise, since you already have the H22 motor, from scale of 1 to 10, you're on 4 already. But if you're putting that H22 in your hatch, dont plan on doing an autocross and expect to be competitive. I heard that the H22 motor is only good for driving straight...drag racing.
I say pop in the H22 and tell everyone who doesn't like it to '**** Off'.
If you're not interested in AutoX, do it. I've heard everyone who hasn't done the swap say it sucks. The one or two guys who have done it, said that there is understeer, but with good suspension, can be pretty much tamed enough for daily driving.
B20 can be an awesome engine, but requires way too much work IMHO.

Please talk with Newman on this board. He has debunked quite a few myths about the H22. I own a B20, and it's great, but an H22 would just wax my *** everywhere. You realize you will require a mount kit and quite a bit of custom work, but IMO, it will all be worth it. You are looking at high 13's... And the handling isn't nearly as bad what people's cousins best friend's sister's husbands say. Talk to newman...

The reason i'd go B20 is because with a mount kit itll bolt right in, unlike the H22 which requires cutting and welding. Also, unless the person who is doing it has a lot of experience with it, you could end up with a lot problems on your hands. The B20 saves a lot of hassle and like said before they make a lot of power. Ive never ridden in a 4th gen with an H22 so i cant say anything about how it handles, I just look at it from the installation point of view. Thats my honest opinion.
The guy that is going to help me has done 3 H22 installs already(1 ina civic and 2 in CRX's) so I think he is capable of doing it right.

I also have a B20. But I know for a fact that it would not be competative with an H22A. Simply put, the H22A is the best possible motor you can swap. It has the power to run high 13's BOX STOCK. Only an ITR motor can make this claim. And it has neither the torque nor the good response to mods of the H22A. Also, the H22A is already built as a VTEC engine. So there is no need to spend big bucks trying to make a CR-VTEC reliable (and this will cost WAYYYY more than you could get from the sale of your H22A). Finally, if you live in California, you are at a great advantage as for as smog legality with an H22A. In California, Frank motors like the CR-VTEC and LS-VTEC cannot be smogged. But as long as you wire up the H22A ECU, you can be legal in California. Unbeatable power, torque, reponse to mods, value, and emissions legality - the H22A is hard to beat!!

you will have alot of fun with traction problems with the h22 due to its massive torque. my friend has done a h22 into a crx down in tampa and he said it pulled like crazy but spun the tires tooo much..
