if its adaily driver and no plans for upgrades then B20 is just fine.
otherwise look into H22, its torquey, its got pretty good HP numbers and alot of support to make even more power.

Also depeds on budget. B20Z will be WAAAAAAAAYYYY cheaper to do, but not nearly as fast as an H22A.
H22's are reasonable at first, but after you buy all the neccessary parts and a $500 mount kit, you are EASILY in the $6k range. (ignore the stunnas that say "my boy dropped one in his hatch for $2500, y0!" because he didn't)

how bout a b20 vtec v. H22
B20 VTEC wins out simple because there are more options for the B series.
Cams, Trannies, rods, oil pumps, every damn thing.

Re: B20 or H22 (Spade)
BUT then you get into the reliability issue. You'd need to find a damn good engine builder and even then, it won't be as reliable as an internally stock H22.
Also, the $$$ involved in building that properly built B20/VTEC will cost a bloody fortune. Much more than the H22A swap.
Apples and oranges, pretty much.

I debated the same thing and went with the H22. As it stands right now, doing the work myself it's going to run me just under $3,000 total.

H22 drag racer huh? It'll be a lil harder to turn but hey he'll get really buff in his arms! Good luck with it. Personally a B20 would be my pick in the basket, and later on when I got used to the power, I would throw on the Vtec head.

Re: B20 or H22 (UpstateCivic)
Well it all depends if you all ready have a swap or not, in my case B18C1 is my starting point, so going with a B20VTEC was much cheaper than H22.
B20 Long Block=$675
Motor Work(Sleeves)=$750
Pistons, Rings, Wrist Pins,Rods, Rod Bolts=$900
So Around $2300 for a Fully Built B20VTEC, I cant complain. But if you Subtract selling the B18C1 block for $600, and all my Signature stuff that is for sale, ill come out Great in the long run!! So to each his own!! IMO

I would go B20, its cheaper, it bolts right up so theres no custom work needed (axles, mounts, etc). All depends on your budget and your goals.
I'm getting a B20Z w/GSR tranny intalled for $2300. I only plan on adding a few bolt ons, and if I wanna go all out I'll go turbo or crvtec.

Re: B20 or H22 (C1V1C)
Had both setups in my EG hatchback a couple of years ago (was originally turbo B20 w/GSR tranny.... then went NOS'd H22 setup). Speed wise, a stock B20 w/GSR tranny is alright (same quickness as a B18C hatchback) but no where as near as fast as a H22 Civic. The H22 by itself has lots of low end power but not nearly as much top end pulling power like the turbo B20 setup had (with 6 lbs of boost also.... 12 lbs was a completely different story). With a 100 shot of NOS on the H22, and the turbo B20 at 12 lbs of boost, both on 22x7x13 slicks at the track, running open header/downpipe, both setups easily ran low 12s, and eventually hit mid-high 11s (driver skill played a huge role there, and it took practice to get the lauching/traction part down). Price wise, the turbo H22 setup was almost double that of the H22 swap.
If you asked me if I had to do it all over again, which setup I would choose.... it would depend on what I'd be using the car for (drag racing vs. road racing vs. daily driving) but once you go turbo, you're hooked
