Default Shifting Problems

ok i have a 1995 Honda Del Sol, it has a D16z6 in it stock. I blew the motor i bought a D16Y7 and have a z6 manual transmission on it right now, im having a problem with 1st and 2nd gear, 1st gear seems to go in a little hard and 2nd gear doesnt seem to want to stay in. If i keep constant pressure on the shifter while in 2nd gear it, if i let off the gas it pops right out of 2nd gear, and if i dont keep pressure on it, it just pops out and grinds, anyone have ne ideas what it could be, ive tried replacing the bushings in the shifter and everything and it made no difference.

Mike

Sounds to me like the 1-2 sleeve is trash if you have the correct Del Sol shift linkage still attached to the trans.

i'm with RyanA on this one. I figure either sleeve or the dog teeth on second gear are partially sheared off (seen it happen on a K-series tranny before, never on a D-series though) Only other thing I can think of is an extremely worn 1st/2nd gear shift fork causing it to not go all the way into gear

yea, go figure the guy i bought it from screwed me over, he said it was perfectly fine and all that, how much do you think it would cost to rebuild a z6 trans, i have 2 of them but my old one seems to have a higher 5th gear, only thing wrong with my old z6 trans is that grinds a little into 2nd and 3rd gear when shifting at high rpm's

i think this weekend im gunna put it on jack stands and remove the linkage and see if is the linkage or the trans, just by selecting the gears by moving it with a screw driver, hopefully its just the transmission. if anyone has any other ideas please let me know, just want to get this thing sorted out.

bump.. anyone this morning have any other ideas to what could be wrong? When i was installing the new motor i found that the mount on the back of the motor was cracked and i welded it up but i dont believe that is what is causing this to happen because it was cracked on my old motor too and it never caused any problems with the transmission.

Given the fact that the shift linkage is completely external, and it worked fine with the original transmission, I would say it's not the linkage. Especially since it works fine for your other gears.

I like the ideas of the other posts. The fork for 1st/2nd may be damaged. I managed to wreck the small contraption that actuates the forks. It wouldn't stay in gear and I ended up getting stuck in 4th gear (that was fun).

The other strong possibility is the issue with the teeth on the synchro rings/sleeve or the synchro teeth on the gears themselves.

Either way, you are going to have to remove your trans.

As for the cost of rebuilding, first, always do the input shaft bearings unless you know they are relatively fresh. They aren't that expensive and they are the first thing to go on an unabused transmission. Honda synchros, since I last checked, are pricey. Even if you change the synchros, if the teeth on the gears are worn, you will need to replace them as well. A good mechanic will be able to tell what is worn and what needs to be replaced.
