Default first gear & reverse grinding

What would cause 1st gear and reverse to grind? The other gears shift fine.

Note: It appears that this only happens when the tranny is warm, does that make sense?

Note2: I did install a B&M straight short shifter; however, that may or may not be relevant

I'm having the exact same problem, only that my reverse doesn't really 'grind' it just won't go in sometimes.
I highly doubt my reverse gear synchro is bad though.
I think its more related to the 1st gear synchro sleeve that reverse gears uses to engage.

I have my transmission out so I'll tear it apart and investigate.

I don't think reverse has a synchro, it has the reverse idler gear that slides up. To stop the grind in reverse, push the clutch pedal down, put the car into 3rd with the clutch pedal still down and then shift into reverse.

Are you stopping completely before putting it into first?

Reverse has a synchro. It also uses the idler gear, the outer part of 1st gear synchro sleeve and the mainshaft.

I can get into reverse if press the clutch in and out a few times in neutral 1st. I usually put the car in neutral while at a complete stop for a while, when I try to go into 1st to pull off, it doesn't go in, I have to pull off in 2nd gear often.
It doesn't pop out or anything, just doesn't go in.

welcome to owning honda transmissions. its just a matter of aligning the shift mechanisms before it goes in. shifter back and forth in neutral, then into first. and if going for reverse, and it wont go in. back and forth in neutral, put it in first, then into reverse

Yeah, the shift change assembly on 2 of my 3 transmissions are really worn in lol. I think it's because the springs on them and cable trannies are so old. 4th gear gives me troubles once in a while but I fixed it now swapping in one of my newer shift change assemblies

I was thinking about this, cause my Synchros are in good condition (at least when I put them in last december).

Cause mine don't grind, just doesn't go in.
