Default Tranny problem: 3rd gear

I accidently pulled my car out of gear(3rd), and now it won't go back into 3rd gear. All the other gears are fine. When I try to shift into 3rd, it just won't move. There isn't any grinds. I can take the shifter out of 1st slide it all the way over and the next gear it falls into is 5th. I have had this happen before awhile back. 4th gear was the problem then and it was doing the same thing. Then, one day it just shifted back into fourth and there was no problem with it since. Does anyone have any ideas?

Your 3rd gear synchro tabs may be deformed and now your synchro is rotated past the point it should be and this will lock you out.

You need to have your synchro check for this.

This BTW happens very often with the 1st and 2nd gear synchros since these gears are physcially large and heavy and their momentum deforms the synchro tabs. This is problem is more com than you think.

How big of a problem is this? Is there anything I can do or should I go to a trans shop? I was thinking about driving it around and hopefully getting lucky like last time.

You'll need the synchro replaced to have that gear working properly again. Most competent tranny builders can do this. Expect about $150 to $250 in labor for the work.

I fixed it this morning with my foot. Thanks though!
