Default New to B Series Looking for info

I just picked u today (for Free) a b18a1 motor and a B16a Block with Crank. I Was told that he had the 18 ready for rebuild. So he said everything was there but needs to be rebuilt. I was wonderin the price for doing a rebuild. Or what should I do? IYHO what would you do?

a complete rebuild???? lol but tear that beast apart and start at the bottom-the block check the cylinder walls, etc.......theres really alot you need to do and im sure you can search and find some info or ask a skilled mechanic that you know to explain it to you,, but if I were you unless you plan on rebuilding to like race spec then i wouldnt even bother, you could buy 1 already rebuilt for cheaper than the money your gonna put into it

I Looked at the block myself but am going to look at it again with my friends. But the bottom end looks good to me. I think I wud just need new pistons and the other things that make it drive. Do you happen to think that it would be better if I sold the 18head or traded it for 16 vtec head or should I just keep the head?

its not that common of a setup but it is possible, however i wld go with the b16 head so you would actually have vtec and more stability

the sleves can look "Good" but may not be, you may have to bore it out a bit and put over sized pistons in, take it to a good shop that you trust and have them look at it.

i would sell the b18 head and b16 block and get either a gsr or b16 head maybe a type r if you got some cash.

My friend just told me that the guy said that only the bearings needed to be replaced. what am i looking at in cost? Also do you think that I could put the bearings from the 16 block? I am thinking no because it's not the same crank or pistons..

get them new.
and its not to hard to do the bearings but having some skill pays of alot, you can easily screw a motor up if you mess this step up.
a full bearing kit from acl is going to run 120-150 on the net.

Did the block have any spun bearings?? How do the bearings look?

I am new to the tuner world, but I have built a couple Chevy v8's. Just because the cylinders look ok, doesn't mean they are. I would take it to a machine shop. They will check the block for cracks, bore and hone the cylinders for the new pistons u get, and maybe polish the crank.

The cylinders may look fine, but there is no way to tell if they are out-of-round just by looks, you need to mic it (or a shop). Plus the honing is to help seat the rings and even though they sell DIY hone kits, the cross hatching has to be at a certain angle and its very hard to do by hand with a drill.

So take it to a machine shop, they will tell you what you need.

And when replacing the crank bearings, I would atleast plastiguage them to make sure clearances are good.
