Default Car wanting to overheat if sitting still... revvv and it's better?

Hey everyone.

Swapped in a d16z6 into my 93CX about 2000 miles ago. Everything was great, loving the hp upgrade until yesterday.

Was sitting waiting in heavy traffic, and all of a sudden noticed my temperature gauge slowly rising. Traffic moved, and as I reved, it went down. After that, any time I slowed down, or came to a stop, here it came.

I also noticed a bit of over pressurization around the radiator cap. It's new. And there was a puddle of coolant ontop of the fan shroud. If I stuck my ear down to it, I could hear a slight hissing... uh oh...

I changed the headgasket on my old d15 and then it started burning oil BAD. Please don't tell me i've got another blown head gasket?!

There's no smoking at all...
Would a bad thermostat effected by revs? I sort of wondered if maybe it was the water pump, but it's supposed to be new.

Fan is kicking in after it's already "more the 1/2 way up the temp gauge", but then cuts off right away. Comes on for a few seconds, and cuts off... shouldn't it stay on?

Both coolant hoses are hot... shorter one is HOTTER... by a bit...

Any ideas?

check and see if your radiator is leaking , even if the water pump is new check for coolant leak at the bottom of timing cover

sounds like a coolant leak and when you start to move the engine is being cooled by the air causing the temps to go down. check coolant level and fix the leak.

i had the same problem with my 97 ex. It was a bad thermostat and the wrong ECU. The fan kicked on @ halfway and then just turned off. You can easily wire the fan to be on all the time like many people that I know did. This way as soon as you turn the key it comes on. If your sitting still and you rev in Neutral and the temp goes down then it could be the water pump's blades have broken off so it doesnt really move coolant until higher RPMs.

Thanks for the replies everyone. So if it were a blown head gasket; reving up the motor wouldn't have any effect on the temp level?

I would also check to see if you have air in you radiator hoses. This happened to me and it turned out to be just some air that was in the system.

I dont see any reason why it would.

i would bleed the coolant system to make sure you dont have air bubbles, like was said before

Thanks all...

Radiator is less then 6 months old.
I've been working all day and haven't had a chance to look at it anymore. Luckily I have a spare vehicle.

I'll try and bleed the system and see if that helps.
If not, i'll replace the thermostat... etc...
Thanks everyone

I guess not...

Yes the radiator fan comes on. It doesn't come on until AFTER it probably should, and then just turns off after MAYBE 30 seconds. It'll do the same thing again and again with perhaps a minute of down time inbetween.

Check your engine grounds.(Valve cover, Transmission, and the thermostat grounds.)

My tranny ground was loose, and my 97 Integra started to over heat, I was lost untill I looked over ground wires, and it was the tranny ground wire.
