Default overheating problem, what could it be?

last night i was getting gas, left car running. then i noticed temp gauge about 3/4 of the way up and climbing. hurry uped and popped hood and rad fan was on. the collant resivor wasnt filling up but both colant lines were a little on the hard side (wich leads me to belive its a head gasket). so i got in the car and started to drive and the temp went back down to norm in the middle of the gauge. if i got on the throttle hard the gauge would go up a little then come right back down to norm, but no white smoke. limped it home, and called it a night since it was like 1am.

woke up this morning thinking it was a head gasket, thinking the collant level in the radiator would be low, but it was full. so i started the car back up with the cap off of the rad and let it run for about a 1/2 hour. warmed up to temp, coolant never bubbled, or did anything just sat there. fan never came on (did test it-ok). at htis point the upper rad hose was hot and the lower was still cold. so i drove up the street and back, poped the hood, the upper rad hose was HOT, but the lower hose was cool, not hot at all. by now the thermostat sould have opened, so why was the lower rad hose still cool.

all of this leads me to belive that the thermostat is stuck, thought i would share with the world before i went and put one in. any thoughts or input would be helpful. thanks in advance

It is recommended by most experts that this not be done.
