Default Can someone confirm that my TRANNY is broken or not??

Here's a photo that I got off of google. So its not my car.

In the photo the red circle is the place of the shiftlinkage/tranny that I will be talking about.

MY tranny won't shift into gears, its not a burnt clutch. The problem is that the little knuckle POPPED out that the shift linkage connects to. The cotter pin IS still in place. The shift linkage is still connected.

SO basically from the red circle everything (knuckle, shift linkage, cotter pin) shifts RIGHT and the whole assembly popped out of the tranny.

Is it broken?? Or is there a fix??

Thanks for the help in advanced.

i'd pull the trans apart before you buy any parts. that rod connects to the bottom of the gear change arm with a bolt.

here is a picture of it...

I've always wondered how these gear rods get bent and broken. It takes quite a hit. On the last tranny I installed the rod was just slightly bent at the entry point. What are kids slamming their cars on these days? That or some warehouse rat is dropping engines and trannys everywhere.

Make sure the slide surfaces arent damaged before installing the new rod.

take pics of EXACTLY how it looks before u tear it apart cause its like a big puzzle with alot of parts if one thing gets messed up accidentally it wont work. try not to separate the gears when u pull them out or the synchros and junk will get out of line. they only fit one way , look carefully how that rod attaches with the spring and stuff before u take it out , clean it real good before u seal it back up with silicone. and use plenty of it. shift it by hand before u put it back in the car by moving the rod with a screw driver , be careful of the snap ring when u take the case off. dont pry it up or down. only spread it all the way apart carefully.

Make sure you have a service manual and all required tools. Take it apart in a clean environment. Clean off your catch magnet and inspect all the bearings while your in there. Take note of the fluid that comes out (looking for metallic flakes).

Here's a good page with lots of descriptive pictures that, while not suited to your particular task, will help you get through the initial separation.

Unless you've just replaced them, order a new shiftshaft seal and release bearing.

And don't use silicone, use Hondabond, or a more cost-effective substitute is Permatex Ultra-Grey.
