Default Well, it's confirmed... I spun a bearing... Help in San Diego?

Anyone know a good rebuild shop in San Diego? I just got quoted $5k which I think is insane... hoping to get it done under $3k... I dont have access to a hoist anymore, so I can't get the block out myself... I'm in no hurry, as I have a daily driver...

Once again everyone... be sure to check your oil levels... I really screwed myself on this one, being careless.

I'm having mine rebuilt right now at Acura.
They quoted me 26 hours of labor plus parts.
Their rate is 100/hr.
Machine shop work (vat/hot tank/hone) = 150$
Rings 135$
Bearings 180$
Upper gasket kit 200$
lower gasket kit 65$
some other stuff, but right at 1100$ worth of parts.
So, all total around 3700$. I decided to spend about 250$ more and have the bearings in the tranny refreshed, +2.5 hours of labor.
I can easily see how it creeps up to 5k.

woah....these companies are NUTS!!! you don't need a hoise to pull the motor. Take the head off man. Then under the lower mounts, pull the tranny and use some muscle to pull the block out. I did it last year and it's not hard. Maybe takes like 3-6 hours depending on how knowledgable you are. You can take the block apart yourself and go to a shop with a bare block and buy the parts you need yourself. Get a experienced shop to rebuild the block if you can't do it yourself. For that price you could build one HELL of a NA build...get it bored out and drop a LS crank in there if I were you.

Good luck, but don't pay over $2k if you can't do it yourself man. Your getting ripped.

You gotta keep in mind that these dealership prices have a SET rate for pulling trannies, motors, etc...I believe most dealership start at $300-500 just to pull the head off an engine. What maybe $1,000 to pull the motor? Do most the work yourself and save a chunk of change man.

Pfft... what do you need a hoist for... this is a honda, not a big block.

They have a fixed hourly rate for labor, the "jobs" are set at some specific number of hours.
They don't charge you extra to do overlapping things...
I would've done it myself, except that I already have one ITR completely torn apart in my garage, and I just didn't have room (or time) for another.
Sure, I'm spending 3k on labor that I could've saved by doing it myself, BUT, I need at least one running vehicle to get to work, and they threw in a rental car.

I wasn't arguing your decision. I was expressing to the original poster that he shoudl try saving himself some money by doing the work himself....at least getting the engine out and in.

Buy the block from Len and have a good shop put it in. Sell the remains.

Get them to itemize it and explain where its all coming from.
Maybe their labor rate is higher??
Maybe they are charging you full price for parts?
Get the parts list from them and buy the parts from Len, just pay for the labor.

Not true on the acura block for the R. My buddy just replaced his and he was quoted 5200 from acura for the engine assembly. The dlr told him the R motor comes unassembled and they have to assemble it at the dlr.

he paid around 5500 for the entire repair from a local shop. He ordered the entire swap from online though, for around 3800 and then the rest was labor and misc. parts that were replaced as a pre-emptive move.

SHORTBLOCK, meaning just the block and internals, accessories like oil and water pumps, water pipe, oil cooler, oil pan/pickup/windage tray. I know, I have bought 2 brand new blocks from the dealer. both were around 2K. afaik if you order a shortblock from Honda, it comes assembled, the dealer doesnt assemble it.

OP, there has to be someone local that can do the install for you if you get the block and save yourself a few grand.

Uhm yeah, wait until you have the funds to fix it and then do what you gotta do. Passing it off just because it's broke is weak.

What were you doing that it spun a bearing anyway?

Sounds like the only thing that is stopping you from doing it youself is getting a hoist...?
why not save $4000+ and do it yourself then?

How about you buy used engine for that money from importers and call it done?
sell of your stuff when it gets pulled or fix and sell either way no pressure and probably better results in the long run
