Default Del Sol Power upgrade

Hey, I'm looking to pul the D16Z6 out of my '93 Si and either replace it with an older DOHC, or just rebuilding the transmission and swapping a built SOHC. Anyone have any suggestions as where I should look for engines/ trannys? I'm having a hard time finding anything for less than 3-4 thousand dollars. I'd like like to keep it within a couple grand, since this is mainly a low end time attack, and I'm putting most of my money into the suspension.

go with a pieced together turbo and keep the z6 if your budget is under 2K, you can get all the basic turbo stuff, headstuds, and the zex59300 cam with tuning and still be in budget pushing about 180whp and around 150ft/lbsbeing reliable. a b series vtec swap will cost more than 2K and leave you with about 130-140whp and 105-115ft/lbs

what do you think I should do as far as reinforcing the engine if I decide to boost it?

Get your motor compression tested and get a leakdown test.

If it runs fine then boost it. D-series are a dime a dozen.

If anything, get new valves/springs/retainers.

If you don't mind having less than 200whp, just arp headstuds, valvetrain, the zex cam and a properly sized turbo can get you you to that point SAFELY...if you want more power than that better get some rods and pistons(though I have heard of people pushing the stock bottom end over 250whp I would HIGHLY advise against it...the stock rods aren't much thicker than a regular sharpie)

Truth. If you want more than 200 you need to have GREAT tuning! A budget build(with pistons/rods) turbo can cost you around 2k without doing valve train if you look around.

^^ with 2k I could do a sick build

The first turbo build I did made 280 something hp on an ls. Junkyard build that cost us ~$600 before tuning.

I hear people saying that a lot. "D-series are a dime a dozen" but no-one seems to be able to advise me on where to look. And can anybody tell me what the "Zex" cam is? I keep hearing about it in reference to turbo motors.

Ebay, Hmotorsonline.

They both sell d-series longblocks/entire swaps.

Craigslist, I've found y8 heads for $200 with the intake manifold.

here and on ebay d16z6s can be had (and when they're available the y8s) for around 500 for a complete swap.

the zex 59300 cam is seemingly the best cam for a turbo z6 motor. Somewhere in the sohc turbo thread a guy gained just over 30whp after tuning (the cam and valvetrain upgrade being the only changes)
