Need help. If I can move the pistons while they r in the block, is it bad?
I was checking my block out and noticed that I can move the pistons to side to side by pushing on them. Is it bad? Is there too much clearence?
No, that doesn't mean the block is bad. You are actually rocking the top of the piston which has a much smaller diameter than the skirt of the piston. If they didn't rock, you might be having ring-land problems from over heating the pistons. Depending on the type of piston, you should be able to slide a feeler guage of from .010-.015 into the gap.
WAIT, WAIT...That's at the skirt, not the top of the piston. It's much looser on top. You can't measure skirt clearance with the pistons and rings installed (unless thru the pan).
