Used pistons - Hone the block or not?
If I'm putting used P30 pistons (nearly new) in a used B18c block (also nearly new) is it nessecery to hone the block if it looks good?

Make sure the block is square on top and that the sleeves are round...and try to match the pistons/rings to the hone job so that you have proper clearance...but not too much. All you haters....correct me if I am wrong.

if you have new rings, then yes you should hone. if you are reusing the old rings (ghetto) you may as well run it as it is since you're just hoping that the rings will seal in exactly the same way as they in the last engine.
during break in the cross hatch from the hone wears the rings to the shape of the cylinder so they seal, the shape of the worn (used) rings may not be the same as your worn cylinders, if it's off by too much you'll get a bunch of blow by.

That's also what I figured so honing the block it is! The thing that sucks is that I don't find any new P30 pistons in Hong Kong were my friend lives. I think that's odd.
So if i take the used pistons with new rings and hone the block, that will be ok?
It's not the pistons that are worn out or is it?

New rings and a hone job is a must. If the cylinders are worn (measure the roundness), then you may not only need to hone them but bore them as well. Likely they will be fine..
The pistons shouldn't be worn. But always inspect them. If they've been slapping against the cylinder walls in some other engine, there should be evidence uncovered by closely measuring them.

I wouldnt use used pistons at all. Pistons as well as cylinder walls are wear items...over time they both become egg shaped instead of circular shaped. So if you put old pistons in an old block, you're putting one egg inside of a different sized egg. If you hone the block, your'e putting an egg inside of a circle...just get new .25 overbore pistons and have the block bored and honed to match.

Yeah my friend didn't either and he had to rebuild his LSVTEC at 10,000 miles because he was burning a quart a week

Re: (BauleyCivic)
Like others said, u mast check if they are truly round or not, use a micrometer and measure the thrust side to back side and measure right above and below the wrist pin. Same thing with cylinder bores.

Re: (leadfoot78)
I'm going to measure everything just to be on the safe side. If I notice that someting isn't right then I'm buying new pistons and bore the block.

wait, i could've sworn the purpose of honing was to remove the glaze
