Has anyone taken apart an IHI VF39(STI turbo)?
I has anybody ever clocked one of these before? I'm having some big trouble trying to clock mine and i think it needs to be done differently than a regular turbo. i need to be able to rotate the compressor and turbine housings so I can get the oil return pointed straight down.
I also tried rotating the compressor housing by taking out all the bolts on it, but it will not rotate. Any idea why? Does it need to be broken loose?
ahh ok so after taking off that exhaust housing i'll see the pin? Damn that exhaust housing is a bitch to get off
Yes. We took my buddies apart to port the wastegate. You have to remove the vband, and pull the housing off. You'll see the pin right away.

Don't mind the writing on the pic, it's from a porting writeup I did on a suby forum. the pin is in the housing. That little nipple looking thing to the left
From what I have read, people say it's a pain to move the compressor housing. I thought of something to try tho if you have a vice and some large channelocks or something like it.
Can you clamp the compressor housing in a vice, take the bolts out holding it on and try to grab the centersection with the channel locks or other device and maybe twist it? Insted of trying to press it off. Just whatever you do, all of the steps I described will need to be done with extreme caution and there is still great possiblity to mess up the compressor wheel.
Useless comment= I don't like the VF39

If you want, you can drill the pin down and you can clock the turbo however you want. Or You can pick how you want the turbo to sit, and you can drill a extra little whole on the housing, so the pin falls into it.

Well I got it all worked out yesterday
. It took me about 1.5 hours to get the damn turbine housing off beating it with a hammer. Finally it budged off and then I took that and the other section over to my welder. He used a plasma cutter and took out the internal wastegate and then welded up the hole for me with cast. Then he used this press thing he had to pull off the compressor housing and it worked great. Car pulls a lot better than when it had the old td04 turbo.
