...... and either they pulled it and pressure washed the inside of the cams area, or my **** is frickin nice!!! No build-up, no caking, no rust, no nothing!!
I know they powerwashed the engine itself, becasuse there were soap bubbles and a little liquid in the #2 plug area (plug was in, so it was just sitting around the plug). Cleaned and dried that best that I could, then pulled the plugs, it all looked good, but the threads of the #2 were a little wet ... just gives me a good excuse to pull the head (which I'll need to do for the new springs/retainers anyways) to make sure it is OK.
Pretty psyched that it wasn't totally gummed up!!

Yeah, I pulled my valve cover before swapping and it was really clean inside. No buildup or anything. I too had a little amount of water in the #3 spark plug tube but I am guessing it got in there when the motor was pressure washed. Good to hear that your motor is clean and looks good inside the head.
i feel you.. my motor from arash at noyan was in good condition.. the head was perfect and i took the head off just this weekend to check out the bottom end.. wooo.. barely any buildup on the pistons.. nothing i couldn't just wipe off with my fingers.. really good condtion... seriously this motor had 30k on it.. hehe.. good luck with the motor..
I had the same thing in one of my plugs. The plug threads got wet when you pulled it. same thing happened to me. I'm not pulling the head.
yea when i got my motor i had water in #2,3,4 spark plug cylinders...when i pulled the valve cover it was also clean as hell
well, really the only reason it WOULDN'T be spic and span under there is if you didn't change your oil for a long time, or had a faulty valve cover gasket, or left the breather hose off or something.

Well, you worry about that kind of isht when the engine is 10 years old ......
I'm pretty psyched that it is in good shape, makes me not so worried about a $750 purchase over a $1200 one .......
I think I might become "entrepeneurial" and see if I can sell one on Fleabay (being a distributor for him). Hmmmmmmm.

Well, if the cams look "Polished" then that's normal wear for the engine. it's probably been getting proper oil changes on time and it's in good overallcondition. The real LOW mile engines still have some "factory black" right on the cams lobes.
But if it's brown(no oil changes) or spotted rust (water got in some how and made love with O2 molecules and metal), think twice about it.
If it's brown, TURN IT DOWN
If it's black DON'T GIVE IT BACK
If it's polished, I DON'T KNOW WHAT RHYMES WITH POLISHED. BUT BELIEVE ME IT SHOULD BE IN GOOD CONDITION!!! L8Z

Well here is an example that disproves that logic. My other car is a 1996 Saturn SL2, I bought it new. This car has had oil changed religiously every 3,000 miles, no leaks or anything. At 106,000 miles this this car has and has had for years the dirtiest looking insides. Everything apears black or brown under the valve cover. It has NEVER overheated or anything. There is more at work than just timely oilchanges with a super clean engine internaly. Most noteably low miles. Thats my personal experience.

Lot of saturns going over 200,000 miles so they aren't all that bad. Internal crud is the point I was making however. Just to point out you can have some nasty looking crud even on a motor that has been religiously maintained, and hasn't been abused in its entire life.
Sorry but I should have been more clear. I was talking about cam lobes only. Have you seen a new CTR/ITR cam? They come with a flat black finish. You could very well have goldfish swimming around the valvetrain (WOW a VTEC Fish???!!!) that would a different story on the engine condition.
