Default Inspecting a motor which is out of a car?

Im not sure if this question has been asked before, but what preventative checks can you do to a motor which is out of a car?

What should be the areas to inspect? Obviously you cant really crack the motor open and see.

Can you do a compresion test and leakdown test with the motor out of the car?

Cheers

i know that you can spin the motor(crank bolt) and see if everything spins. removing the valve cover also hel in the inspection while turning the engine.

dont get ripped off (like i did) i bought a used b18a1 and it turned out it needed a rebuild. check for signs of overheating, leakage anywhere around the head. see if he will let you take off the valve cover. check that the oil doesnt seem burnt(smells bad really black) check for heat discoloration on the camshafts, rotate the engine and make sure it feels like it has compression. the inside of the head should wipe reasonably clean, if the aluminum is stained bad its got many miles or overheated or both, check condition of vaccum lines and hoses to determine overall age and maintence level. check spark plugs to see how it was running. if the guy wont let you do these things dont buy it. too many crap engines out there

Good info. Keep it coming? Could I do a compression test by just tapping the starter to a battery?

Pull the valve cover off and inspect, do a leakdown test, and if you have a engine hoist or stand pull the oil pan and inspect the crank, rods, etc...
