Default How to tell if a motor is blown!?

How would someone check if a motor is blown without installing it in a car. Is there a way to visually inspect and check for play....and where would i check.

any huge gaping holes in the block

also you could get an VERY ROUGH guesstimate as to the health of the compress give her spin of the crank and there are 3 stiff parts well then you might have something wrong with a cyclinder.

you can always pull the head

Do a compression and leakdown test. Those should tell you the working order of the motor.

Compression test....so im gonna crank the expletive out of it with my hands for that....would it be accurate.

---

any way to tell For rod knock/any bottom end damage. I know leakdown will tell piston rings, but what about crank.

Attach the starter to it and crank it with some jumper cables to do the tests.

they are trying to help. dont be a dick.

if you have enough common sense, do what i did.

use a tow strap and strap the motor to something solid. see: tree.
jump the starter. battery works.
boom. you can do a compression test.

or just do a leakdown. doesnt matter if its in or out of the car.

How do i bolt the starter to the motor if the tranny is not attatched and there is no flywheel attached?

look for metal parts that shouldnt be there like part of a valve, dings in the piston or cylinder walls, or maybe a broken rod.

damn...Im getting an LS this weekend, and was going to ask the same damn question on how the hell you people get motors off of others.

To me its too much of a hassel to pull head and crap off a motor that "was running".
Now that you are satisfied. Now might as well get a new Head-gasket, timing belt, head bolts, and a damn water pump. Oh and not to forget valve-cover and oil pan gasket and junk. Thats if the seller happens to have an engine stand....

I myself got screwed a few times....especially with trannies. ****
