Default Manual steering rack in a 94 civic ex with power - need some help

Basically my rack & pinion needs to be replaced along with the passenger side axel. I want to pick up a manual rack and use it to replace the power rack. What else should I replace other then the broken axle? Should I get new inner and outer tie rods? Is there any bushing I should replace? I really need some help with this so if you know please tell me.

From what I have seen this is a pretty straight forward install but I do not have space to do it and without a step by step write up I do not feel comfortable doing it. If I end up taking it to a shop around how much will I be charged to have them install it “labor”?

I just got paid and want to take care of this ASAP so I can drive my car - any advice / suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I believe you could use your stock tie rods, but dont quote me on that. But other then that all you need is the manual rack.

Shops charge around 60 for axle replacement (labors).

Thanks for the reply - how can I tell if the tie rods are still good? Also I wondering if the new rack will include some?

If you get a "NEW" steering gearbox, it will not come with inner, or outer tie rod ends. If your buying a used steering gearbox, it will come w/ whatever they give you (just ask the seller what is included).

The balljoints can be pretty tough. Basically if there is no play, and the balljoints move smoothly, you don't need to replace them. I would, however, replace all the boots, and bushings while I had the whole thing apart. That way you don't need to worry about it for a long time.

Replace: #21, #22, #24x2, #27x4. Also make sure that #10 is in good shape by wiggling the passenger side of the rack gear (#9) to check for play.

Thanks for the info - you are by far one of the most helpful h-t members.

I almost feel like giving it a shot myself with the help of h-t, and a helms. I guess if I get stuck I could always have it towed to a shop near by – something I will look into before hand.

Any idea on how I suppose to do the actual swap? I have heard it basically blots right and is not really hard to do. I guess I would follow the same steps as the tie rod write ups but unbolt the steering as well.

If I do end up doing this by myself I will make sure to take photos and make a write up but it is still intimidating the hell out of me.

Yes – you will replace the power rack with a manual one. I was told its best to get one off an eg - ej and not an integra. There is also a way to plug your power rack but being as mine is broken I do not have that option.

Where in SD are you at? If you want to do it yourself, and need some help, let me know. As long as I dont have any tests for school or anything, I can probably lend you a hand.

Is there anything else you have to do in switching from the power to manual rack besides just swapping the racks?

I changed the one out in my CRX this summer and it wasn't too hard.

Make sure you have the D bushings and brackets from a manual rack. The ones from the P/S rack are bigger than the manual ones. P/S racks are thicker than the manual. Good Luck on your swap
